When I first heard that Pier was shutting down I was utterly disappointed as I had many fond dining experiences there. However, having found out that the space was to be renovated for a more casual dining with the same kitchen staff, I knew I had to go back for my birthday celebration with these lovely people :) (this post is long overdue so some of the items are no longer on the menu as it’s seasonal)

The Sailors Club situated in Rose Bay boasts a mesmerising ocean view as the yachts bob back and forth. The place is decked out with bright yellows and shades of blue which brings a great energy and vibrance to the venue. Definitely can see myself hanging around here in the cool sea breeze in summer sipping on cocktails, wearing a kaftan and the boy in chinos and boat shoes. We decided to share our entrees and ordered a main each. Just as our mains had arrived, so too had Australia’s renowned personal trainer, Michelle Bridges who sat a few tables away from us! No pics though so you’ll have to trust me that she was there haha. Figured that having her picture taken over lunch on a weekend was the last thing on her mind.

Entree: Duck liver parfait, grilled pear, lavender and honey
Huge ball of velvety smooth duck liver parfait, soft grilled pear, fresh honeycomb, and slices of thinly crisp brioche ^^ the lovely staff even bought over extra slices of crisp bread. I could eat this everyday!

Entree: Crudo of John Dory, char-grilled chillies and grapefruit
Entree: Mozzarella stuffed zucchini flowers, tomato and saffron confit
Entree: Whiting crumbed in orange and almond, lemon confit
Light and refreshing plate of beautifully presented slices of raw John Dory drizzled with olive oil, citrus juice, and finely diced chillies. Deep-fried zucchini flowers which were the perfect vessel to envelope the stretchy, melty mozzarella.

Entree: Pan roasted mussels, chorizo, red onion and parsley
Plenty of mussels to share around with everyone but it was the gorgeous white wine creamy sauce that we were all trying to mop up with the sourdough bread!

Main: TSC Three Cut Burger, Lettuce Heart, Onion & Beetroot 23
Main: Seared Yellow Fin Tuna, White Anchovy Cucumber & Chilli Salsa (gf) 33
Main: Risotto of Summer Vegetables (v) (gf)
The burger seemed to be a popular order amongst other diners in the restaurant. Tried some of the boy’s burger (after some styling photography tips from theheartoffood ^^), the patty was made up of three cuts of beef, hanger, ribs, and rump. Really liked the beetroot relish which had a good balance of tartness and sweetness. Oh and I do like crisps! They were so crunchy and reminded me of Kettle chips :) Tasted some of the seared yellow fin tuna which was cooked perfectly with the middle flesh still pink and just melted in my mouth.

Main: Flathead in Cooper’s Batter, Chips & Tartare Sauce 29
This was also another popular order choice but it was the perfect setting. Waterview, lots of sunlight, cocktails, and fish & chips. Simple and satisfying, golden crunchy batter with flakey tender flathead dipped in house-made tartare sauce will dill and briny capers.

Main: Roasted Kingfish with Braised Mushrooms & Parsley Oil (gf) 34
Side of sweet corn
I was really pleased with my dish :) The roasted kingfish was sitting on a bed of earthy braised mushrooms in a flavoursome broth dotted with parsley oil. An umami sensation that was enhanced with the side of roasted paprika sweet corn.

Complimentary pre-dessert surprise!
Oh my lordy! Isn’t that a delightful sight! I really did not expect this at all but we each received one of these marvelous berry floats with buttermilk cream and a sherbet rim. Tangy and fizzy, I could eat this all day!

Apricot creme caramel, puffed rice, raspberry, fromage blanc
Mini banoffee glace, peanut
The desserts here sure are a stunning sight and they don’t disappoint. The apricot creme caramel played on the salty and sweet combination which helped bring out the fruity fragrance. Delicious banoffee with each mouthful met with a creamy banana pudding, toffee shards, buttery biscuit crumbs, crushed peanuts, and a delectable butterscotch sauce.

The Sailors Club Tiramisu 19
This seems to be their signature dessert and was very wowing! Tiramisu not as you know it. It came out looking like a pile of rubble with wisps of liquid nitrogen escaping through the cracks. But it was everso decadent! You can’t judge a book by it’s cover ;) There was a sweet swirl of caramel, marscapone chunks that tasted like meringue, and little nuggets of chocolate blanketing a moist coffee soaked sponge.

Another complimentary birthday surprise!
Black Forest Birthday cake <3

As we got up to leave after paying the bill, our waitress brought out one final hurrah - a gift from the chef :) a deconstructed black forest birthday cake! So much love to the team at The Sailors Club - need to come back to check-out their lounge bar menu and the smaller sweets like their Aperol lollipop!
Here you can read my other birthday posts (still one more to come, Cafe Sydney): Guillaume at Bennelong, Cafe Morso, Sweethearts Rooftop BBQ, and Black Star Pastry
